Wedding photography with a difference

Wedding photography can be very same-y.  The same shots, the same angles, the same order of the day, the same lighting, the same smiles.  Whilst every couple is different to the next, and every venue has its own unique charms, its quite easy to fall into the trap of doing the standard series of shots, following the same formula. Any wedding photographer worth their salt will strive for as much creativity as they can inject – either waiting for the right opportunity, or making it happen. But you look at many portfolios and what you see is the same pattern across the bulk, with the odd spark of ingenuity or cleverness. Its really very tough, thinking on your feet, always getting ready for next series of shots, whilst working out how on earth you’re going to get a quirky and ‘different’ image.

So as photographers, its occasionally good to think outside the box, and see things from a different perspective – viewing other photographers work, generally surrounding yourself with art and great design, leaving the camera behind and forcing yourself to ‘think’ the image, and thinking in a different art medium (oils are currently my favourite inspiration).

But what about *really* challenging yourself to some different angles? I tend to think that largely depends on the bride and groom, and how much they want to veer from the traditional shot. See here for some examples of what I mean – from Alice Yoo’s blog, 15 images conveying truly ‘artistic’ wedding photography. Not necessarily to everyone’s style, but heh wacky can be good!
