I’ve just had the rather interesting experience of watching the latest Channel 5 programme on weddings “I Want that Wedding!“. Its always quite staggering how much creativity and individuality people can bring to their wedding – and from a wedding photography perspective, the more ideas you can bring to your big day, the easier it gets for me. Some of the weddings were really rather mega-budgets (£25k for the venue alone), which is not exactly the type of wedding I tend to cover (but always happy to of course); but I like the simpler approach. The wedding where the bride walked barefoot down the aisle (i.e. South coast beach). The wedding where the bridesmaids dispensed with floral bouquets and held huge lollipops instead. The wedding where the reception meal was fish, chips and mushy peas – served in newspaper. The wedding where they had an egg & spoon race, and a tug-of-war, before the reception.
My message to you is this – keep it simple, don’t feel you have to outdo your friends, fill it with your style, and remember its the little touches that people will really remember. Wedding budgets on the programme were ranging from £5k, to well over £50k. Alcohol was either limited to the occasional glass; to freely flowing jugs of sangria. Food varied from a full-on banquet; to fish, chips and cheesecake. The evening event varied from a £15k band to dance to; to sparklers and chinese lanterns.(You always need to use the latter carefully of course.)
Do it as you choose
Don’t feel you have to copy
Don’t feel you have to out-do your friends
Do add lots of touches about you
Do take every opportunity to add a bit of style – not tacky tacky, butreal genuine style
